A Beautiful Baby (Handout 3)

Born on August 1st, 2004, Miss X proved to be a healthy baby girl. However, 13 months after her birth, she stopped being the energetic baby her mother once knew. Miss X was now pale and and began losing her appetite. Her mother began to be concerned and decided to take her to the doctor.

She recieved a routine exam, where her doctor indicated that her weight and length were both in the 25th percentile, indicating that she was normal. The symptons could be related to a recent flu that was going around at the time. The doctor indicated the mother to monitor Miss X and return later in the week if the symptons do not disappear.

After a week, her symptons had not subsided. Another appointment was made. The doctor ran some tests and concluded that Miss X's spleen was slightly enlarged, indicating that it was working harder to produce immune cells to fight infections. This could be an indication of a blood disorder. The doctor moved on to draw blood samples from Miss X and her mother, who has sub-Saharan African ancestry. Miss X's disease could also mean an inherited blood disorder.
